  • Lt. Col. William Newton Crump 1818-1882 (26 KB)
    He was mustered into the Confederacy Army in Nashville, Tenn in Jan. 1862 He served as Captain in the I - 49th Alabama Infrantry Regiment. He served in the battles at Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Corinth and Ft. Hudson. In the several battles in which he was engaged he was cool and fearless and won the admiration, respect and love of his men. Few officers were more popular and beloved by their men than Lt. Col. Crump. A man of good motive, ability and of strong personal magnetism. After the Battle of Shiloh he was promoted to Lt. Col and held that rank until his resignation in 1863 because of ill health. His three sons who also fought for the South. He later represented Blount Co. and St. Clair Counties in the STate Legislature.
