THE ISLIP BULLETIN JULY 19, 1999

The Newins family’s second Reunion:

The Newins family, whose roots on Long Island can be traced back to the late 1700s, held a family reunion on July 11, 1999. The gathering of the clan was enjoyed by all who had attended a cruise aboard the Lauren Kristy paddle boat. It was a perfectly beautiful day.
The "royalty" of the occasion were patriarch Horace Newins and his sister, Roberta Newins Stocks. The gathering, which included 65 members of various branches of the Newins family, was made possible by the hard work of many, primarily Spencer “Bud” Newins Jr. of Islip, Tom Newins, Bud’s son from Alaska, Horace Newins of Bay Shore, Larry Newins of Levittown, Bill Jenkins of Blue Point and Robert Garcia of Camelot Genealogical Services of Patchogue, who also but together a wonderful memory book.
Mr. Garcia has gleaned a wealth of information on the Newins family. His interest in the family began while doing research on the history of a home in Patchogue in which he and his family have lived for 30 years. The home was built by William Hiram Newins in l851
Mr. Garcia was able to obtain information from old cemeteries, newspapers and the Damon and Grace Newins family archives. With the help of Brookhaven historian David Overton, he was able to accumulate an amazing amount of Newins family history.
His interest in meeting members of the family coincided with Bud and Tom’s interest in organizing family photographs. From there the mutual interest grew which led to the family reunions. Family .members had traveled to the reunion from Alaska, North Carolina, Connecticut, Massachusetts New Jersey and all over Long Island.
The Newins family originated in the United Kingdom and the name can be found in official records revealing a long history on Long Island in the Patchogue and Islip areas. Mr. William Newins
-was born in Ireland in 1755. He was a American Naval officer during the American Revolution and was
stationed in Boston Harbor. He went overland from there and made his way to Long Island where he eventually married Martha Smith (daughter of Benjamin). They settled in Patchogue where he was employed at the Patchogue-Blue Point Oyster Company. Many years later, it was his sbn William Hiram Newins born in 1828 who built the Patchogue home the Garcia family now occupies.
William H. Newins was the proprietor of a clam and oyster business and also owned a bathing pavilion located on the corner of Bay and Smith Streets
in Patchogue, In the late 1800s he helped finance businesses for two of his sons. Howard Newins owned a clothing store on Main Street in Islip and Fred Newins co-owned Swezey & Newins Department Store in Patchogue.
The stories of the Newins family continue and are very interesting. The memory book is very comprehensive and filled with lineage, stories and photos of each branch of the family. Everyone who attended this year’s event is looking forward to the next Newins Family Reunion.
